Introduction

MIDI, short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a technical standard used to transmit musical performance data between electronic instruments, computers, and audio equipment. Unlike audio signals, which represent recorded sound waves, MIDI transmits digital instructions that describe how music should be performed.

These instructions can include information such as which note is played, how hard it is struck, how long it lasts, and which instrument should produce the sound. Because MIDI represents musical data rather than sound itself, it allows musicians to control synthesizers, virtual instruments, and other music technology systems with great flexibility.

MIDI plays a central role in modern music production and is widely used in Digital Audio Workstations such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio.

When a musician presses a key on a MIDI keyboard, the instrument does not send audio. Instead, it sends a digital message that contains instructions describing the musical action.

A typical MIDI message might include:

• the pitch of the note
• the velocity or intensity of the key press
• the start and stop of the note
• modulation or control data

These messages are sent to another device, such as a synthesizer or computer, which interprets the data and produces sound.

For example, pressing middle C on a MIDI keyboard sends a message indicating the pitch of the note. A connected synthesizer or software instrument receives this instruction and generates the corresponding sound.

MIDI Messages and Data

MIDI communication is based on different types of digital messages that represent musical events.

Common MIDI message types include:

Note On and Note Off

These messages indicate when a note begins and ends. They include the pitch of the note and the velocity with which it is played.

Velocity

Velocity measures how quickly a key is pressed. Many synthesizers use velocity to control loudness or timbre, allowing more expressive performances.

Control Change

Control change messages adjust parameters such as modulation wheels, expression pedals, or filter controls.

Program Change

Program change messages instruct a device to switch between different instrument sounds or presets.

Pitch Bend

Pitch bend messages allow performers to smoothly raise or lower the pitch of a note.

Together, these messages allow MIDI devices to communicate detailed musical instructions.

MIDI Controllers

A MIDI controller is a device that sends MIDI data to other equipment but does not necessarily produce sound on its own.

Common types of MIDI controllers include:

• keyboard controllers
• pad controllers used for drum programming
• control surfaces with knobs and faders
• wind and guitar MIDI controllers

These devices allow musicians to control virtual instruments and synthesizers inside software environments.

MIDI in Digital Music Production

In modern production workflows, MIDI is most commonly used to control software instruments within a Digital Audio Workstation.

A MIDI track inside a DAW contains note data rather than recorded audio. When the track plays back, the MIDI data triggers a virtual instrument that generates the sound.

This approach offers several advantages:

• notes can be edited after recording
• instrument sounds can be changed without re-recording
• musical patterns can be easily copied or rearranged
• performances can be quantized or corrected

Because MIDI data is lightweight and flexible, it is widely used in composition, arrangement, and electronic music production.

MIDI Channels

MIDI devices communicate using up to sixteen separate channels. Each channel can control a different instrument or sound source.

For example:

• channel 1 may control a piano sound
• channel 2 may control a bass synthesizer
• channel 3 may control a drum module

This channel system allows multiple instruments to be controlled through a single MIDI connection.

MIDI Hardware Connections

Traditional MIDI connections use a five-pin DIN cable that links devices through three ports:

MIDI In, which receives messages
MIDI Out, which sends messages
MIDI Thru, which passes messages to another device

Modern MIDI devices often use USB connections instead of traditional cables, allowing controllers to connect directly to computers.

MIDI vs Audio

One of the most important distinctions in music technology is the difference between MIDI data and audio signals.

MIDI represents musical instructions, while audio represents recorded sound waves.

For example:

• MIDI data can be edited and transposed easily
• audio recordings capture actual sound performances
• MIDI files are small because they store instructions rather than audio

Because of these differences, MIDI is commonly used during composition, while audio recordings are used during final production and mixing.

MIDI in Modern Music Technology

Since its introduction in the early 1980s, MIDI has become one of the most important standards in electronic music production. It allows different devices and software systems to communicate using a shared language of musical instructions.

MIDI remains essential for:

• synthesizers and electronic instruments
• computer-based music production
• film and game scoring
• live electronic performance

Even as music technology continues to evolve, MIDI continues to serve as the backbone of communication between musical instruments and digital production systems.
